Day 1 - Paro - Thimphu

Druk-Air, your flight to Paro flies over eight of the ten tallest peaks of the world, the Everest, Kanchenjunga and many more.As you descend you will see lush green mountains dotted with sparse farm houses andnice terraces impossibly perched in high, remote valleys. You realize immediately you are coming to a special place. Then you land at the only International Airport in Bhutan. The first thing you will experience is the clean fresh air of Bhutan.

In Thimphu, check in the hotel and after lunch you can visit the following places:-

 

 

 

 

The Folk Heritage Museum Founded by Her Majesty the Queen Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck. This museum gives you a sense of what a traditional Bhutanese home looked like in the medieval days. Many houses in the villages more or less still look like this one.

The Institute for Zorig Chusum (13 traditional arts & crafts):

Day 2 - Thimphu

National Library It has Bhutan’s history in the form of religious and historical literature.

The Institute of Traditional Medicine: Here one can receive indigenous treatment. It produces its own herbal medicine.

Lunch will be at the famous Bhutan Kitchen where you will be served typical Bhutanese dishes prepared to suite a foreigner’s taste.

 

 

Memorial Chorten This Stupa was built built in 1974 in memory of the Third King, His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuk.

Textile Museum: Here you will see the intricate weaving and the art of vegetable dyeing of two edificies of the rich textile tradition of Bhutan.

Evening at your leisure.

Day 3 - Thimphu - Punakha

In the morning drive to Punakha. The drive from Thimphu to Punakha is the most enjoyable one. First you come across the Dochula pass from where a beautiful panoramic view of the Himalayan mountain range can be seen, specially on a clear winter days. The beauty of this place is further enhanced by the Druk Wangyal Chortens – a 108 stupas built by the eldest Queen. Then we descend to a warm climate. All through your journey you will come across many farm houses and farming taking place.

Visit Punakha Dzong. The interior of the Dzong is very beautiful and it is well maintained. Therefore, it is worth visiting it. It was built a year before the Wangdi Dzong in 1637. The most sacred treasure, the mortal remains of Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the founder of modern Bhutan, is preserved in this Dzong.

Punakha is much lower in altitude and has an almost sub-tropical climate. It used to be the capital of Bhutan at one point but now serves as the winter capital for the monk body that moves their headquarters from Thimphu.

Day 4 - Punakha - Bumthang

This long journey to Bumthang takes about 7 ½ hrs with stopover for lunch at Trongsa. On your way you will see many farm houses high up on the mountain tops with no motor roads, which seems very impossible for the villagers to reach there in a days walk. You will also see many varities of vegetations. Upon reaching Trongsa, the first thing that impresses you will be the Trongsa Dzong which is the biggest Dzong in Bhutan perched on a stiff mountain. Driving through the valley you would even wonder whether your eyes are deceiving you or it is really the Dzong that is very far to reach.

Luch will be at Yangkhil resort. From here one can have a spectacular view of the Dzong. After lunch push off to Bumthang.

Day 5 - Bumthang

Bumthang has an altitude of 8,530 – 13,125 feet. This is one of the most beautiful valley in Bhutan. There are many old and beautiful Buddhist temples and monasteries. The valley is famous for its production of honey, cheese and yatra (a woolen material that is being used for making Jackets and Blankets and many more).

In the morning explore Paro Valley. Paro is one of the most beautiful valley. There are many holy places. Therefore, it is worth visiting them.

You can have a choice of hiking up to Taktsang monastery or visit other places.

You can visit the following places:-

Jambay Lhakhang This 108 monasteries is built by King Songtsen Goenpo in the 8th Century to subdue evil spirits in the Himalayan region.

Kurje Lhakhang In the 8th century Guru Padmasambhava (the saint who brought Buddhism to the Himalayan region) was supposed to have mediated here.

Tamshing Lhakhang It was built in 1501 by Terton Pema Lingpa (a re-incarnation of Guru Padmasambhava) and whose lineage the Royal Family trace their ancestors to.

Jakar Dzong It is the administrative center for the Bumthang district. The most popular Tshechu (festival) which is performed mostly at night is held in this Dzong.

Day 6 Bumthang - Trongsa

Return to Trongsa. Trongsa has an altitude of 7,600 feet. It forms the central hub of the kingdom and is historically the place from where attempts at unifying the country were launched.

Trongsa Dzong Built in 1648, Trongsa Dzong is the ancestral home of the Royal family. Bothe the first and the second King ruled the country from this ancient seat. All Kings hold the post of Trongsa Penlop prior to being crowned as King.

Ta Dzong Perched above the Traongsa Dzong. It is a watch tower which once stood guard over the Trongsa Dzong from internal rebellion. It is now being turned into a heritage museum.

Overnight at Trongsa

Day 7- Trongsa - Thimphu

Return to Thimphu. Lunch at Dragon’s Nest. On the way visit Chhimi Lhakhang.

Day 8 Thimphu - Paro

In the Morning return to Paro. After lunch visit the following places.

Ta Dzong- (The National Museum) This circular shaped building that is now a museum served as a watchtower for Paro Rinpung Dzong.

Then visit Paro Rinpung Dzong- Rinpung means a heap of jewels. This Dzong is the one you see first when you disembark from the Druk Air and enter Bhutan. It was built in 1646 by Shabdrung Nawang Namgyel, unifier of the country under the Drugpa Kagyu sect of Buddhism. The Rinpung Dzong is host to the famous Paro Tsechu festival that is a big tourist attraction.

If you are not tired then visit Kyichu Monastery - This is one of the most sacred and oldest temples in Bhutan. It was built in 7th Century by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo, to subdue the demons that was terrorizing the Himalayan countries.
